The computer chip technology, seen to be central to the success of the new console, will be approximately 200 times as powerful as chips currently used in today’s personal computers and games consoles.

Sony is reported to be spending around £275 million developing the computer chip technology on which the new PlayStation is based. The company also sees other applications in the fields of television and electronics for its chip technology.

Sony is seeking to maintain its dominant position in the video games console market by developing the new version of the PlayStation before competitors Nintendo and Microsoft introduce their next generation consoles.
