Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and MGM Home Entertainment will initially release eight Blu-ray titles, with another eight set to follow in June. Included among the first releases are ’50 First Dates’, ‘A Knight’s Tale’, and ‘Resident Evil: Apocalypse.’
The Blu-ray Disc (BD) format, which boasts almost five times more data storage than DVD, is competing against the HD DVD format supported by companies such as Toshiba, to become the industry standard in next-generation DVD technology.
Philip Abram, VP of marketing for Sony Electronics’ Home Products, said, The first Blu-ray Disc titles from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment marks a significant milestone in the BD revolution of home entertainment. We are excited about the upcoming launch of the BDP-S1 Blu-ray Disc player and with engaging content from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment consumers are in for a spectacular high-definition experience.
Sony says it will time further Blu-ray Disc movie releases to coincide with the launch of BD players from Pioneer and Sony, along with a BD-compatible Vaio PC from Sony.
