Sony Computer Entertainment Inc has revealed more details of the Playstation chip venture that it has started with Toshiba Corp. The plant, which is expected to start production in the fall of this year, will be making the jointly-developed Emotion Engine multimedia chips for the new console. According to Nikkei electronics, the plant will be able to produce 10,000 8-inch wafers per month. The production lines will use 0.15 and 0.18 micron process technologies.

The companies are expecting to ramp up production to 2 million chips per month. One industry insider said the expected production figures, would be an impressive display if they could achieve it. Sony expects to have the new Playstation available to buy in Japan by the end of this year. Industry analysts have already noted how ambitious SonyÆs production schedules for the new machine are given the amount of new and untried technology, the firm is using in the console.
