SONY COMPLETES DEVELOPMENT OF STILL PICTURE COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS

Sony Corp has completed development of a still picture communications system for use on Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp’s Integrated Services Digital Network: the system comprises a 500 dot per inch horizontal resolution electronic still video camera, the Promabica, as the input device, a newly developed DIH-2000 Digital Information Handler as a multi-media communications terminal that handles speech, text and data as well as wideo, and a special keyboard and modem board for communications over normal telephone lines; it will make possible high-speed transmission over telephone lines of photographs, brochures and advertising material; the central unit costs around $11,000; the camera input device around $7,500; and the still video receiver-player costs $2,500.
