Sony Corp is determined to make its MiniDisk optical recording standard for to audio market – the tiny units can play pre-recorded MiniDisks and also record up to 74 minutes of music on blank 2.5 optical platters, which come in a casing similar to the 3.5 floppy – and one means of bringing the price down and embedding the standard is to push the things as data storage devices as well. Accordingly, it has launched its MD Data drive and reckons that it is the ideal successor to the 3.5 floppy disk, offering up to 140Mb capacity on the 2.5 disk; no prices.
