The upgrade, Sony Firmware 2.0, will also give increased data security on the device and enhance digital photo-sharing and video playback capabilities. Users will need at least 16MB of free space on the PSP’s Memory Stick Pro Duo card in order to download and install the firmware update.
Detailed specs of the add-on are still sketchy, and Sony was unable to provide ComputerWire with a spokesperson for comment on the device. What is known however is that the browser is specific to Sony and it should allow users to enter a web site’s URL via a fairly clunky looking onscreen alphanumeric type keyboard, normally found on mobile handsets. However, it should be noted that not all web pages may display properly because the browser is not compatible with Macromedia Flash.
The upgrade also apparently allows for connection to email, although the lack of a decent keyboard should limit the appeal of this option.
The PSP device is already available in the US and Japan, and is scheduled for launch in the UK on September 1.
