250,000 units sold in UK 48 hours after release.

By Ben Sullivan

Sony has revealed that not only has the Playstation 4 has become the fastest selling console in the UK, offloading 250,000 units within the first 48 hours, but two weeks after the next-gen console’s US launch, global sales stand at more the 2.1m.

President of Sony Computer Entertainment, Andrew House, said: "PS4’s North American debut on 15 November was PlayStation’s largest ever, with more than 1 million gamers picking up a PS4 in just 24 hours.

"Now, with PS4’s global launch expanding to a total of 32 countries worldwide, including Europe and Latin America, I’m proud to announce that more than 2.1 million PS4s have been sold. It’s an impressive and record-setting accomplishment for our company and for our industry."

Microsoft has yet to reveal sales figures for the Xbox One, although reports suggest that Microsoft beat Sony in the US on Black Friday, with the Xbox One taking 31% of sales as opposed to the PS4’s 15%.

Compared to the release of the Playstation 3 in 2006, Sony is doing well. Just 1.68m units were sold globally by the end of the release year, with only 400,000 units available in the US.

Sony has said that it plans to sell 3m PS4s by the close of 2013.
