Roaming in other operators’ GPRS networks is a basic requirement for mobile subscribers who wish to access global mobile Internet services. With inter-GRX peering, Sonera and Telenor have effectively shown that roaming can be implemented via separate, interconnected GRXs. Sonera and Telenor launched their GPRS networks in December 2000 and January 2001 respectively.

Inter-operator roaming is a crucial issue in the world of global mobile communications, announced senior vice president Timo Levoranta from Sonera Mobile Internet Operator Services, in a media statement. Customers expect the same roaming capabilities with GPRS as they are used to having with GSM. Together with Telenor we are able to show that customers can access their mobile services in a multi-GRX environment, wherever they roam.

We are as GRX-providers pleased to enable our customers to reach a large number of roaming partners worldwide. Signing this first GRX-to-GRX agreement with Sonera is an important step towards global coverage, says product director Terje Haufmann from Telenor Global Services. The most important step forward is that this peering agreement also includes security procedures, which is an essential issue in the roaming service.
