The first two prosecution attempts made by the Belgian Business Software Alliance against companies accused of unauthorised use of software are already proving how difficult it is likely to be to get a firm verdict against so-called software pirates. CAMI SA, a Brussels-based Macintosh dealer, has launched a counter-appeal against the Alliance’s claim that it was breaking the Belgian authorship protection laws by copying software, while another dealer, Microtraitement SA, Charleroi, has managed to postpone court proceedings on a similar charge against it. CAMI says it was unaware of any copying of software by its sales force, and is therefore disclaiming corporate responsibility. The Software Alliance says it is still willing to discuss out-of-court settlements with the two firms.
