Software AG says that its acquisition of Berlin-based SQL Datenbanksysteme GmbH will bring it one step closer to integrating its main three product lines. Software AG develops, markets and supports SQL database systems under the banner of Adabas D. It believes that the acquisition of SQL Datenbanksysteme will enable it to integrate its Adabas, Natural and Entire products into a single system. The acquisition, said Achim Grenz, Software AG vice-president in charge of research and development, puts his company more at ease about the future. We has always wondered what would happen to the product if Siemens Nixdorf cancelled the relationship. Now we have SQL and know the relationship is reliable, Grenz said. The company, which was established in 1989 from a Nixdorf development team, was made into an independent company and was subsequently sold back to Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG. However, SQL Datenbanksysteme’s distributed database product has been marketed exclusively by Software AG under its current name, Adabas D. The development of one single suite that integrates Adabas, Natural and Entire products is under way but the company will not yet say when the system will be ready to ship.
