Yahoo cuts Windows Live Messenger support

The company is pulling the plug on several of its features including messenger public chat rooms and Pingbox.

Yahoo will be closing down its messenger public chat rooms this month along with interoperability with Microsoft Windows live Messenger.

Users will be able to still see Microsoft buddies in their messenger contact list but instant messages will not be able to be sent to them.

"We know that some long-term Yahoo! Messenger users still enjoy these topic-based communities, however we feel that by embracing the modern technologies and platforms available today, Yahoo! will uncover better ways to foster meaningful communities and connections with the people you care about," said Yahoo about closing its messenger public chat rooms.

Other services being cut include Pingbox and Yahoo’s voice phone in and phone out feature.

Pingbox allows users to chat with visitors on social networks, blogs or websites through Yahoo messenger. Users are now encouraged to uninstall Pingbox before the service is cut off on December 14, 2012.

Yahoo’s phone in and out capabilities thorough Jajah will be dropped on January 30, 2013. Users can now no longer add new funds to their account and those who have a balance in their accounts will receive instructions on how to request a refund.

The company said its reason for discontinuing some of the messenger services is to make way for new features it plans to provide for Yahoo Messenger.

"We have decided to discontinue several Yahoo! product features. This will enable us to refocus our efforts on modernizing our core Yahoo! products experiences and of course, create new ones," said the company.
