Windows XP still running on over a quarter of computers

Windows Vista running on more desktops than Mac OS X.

By Ben Sullivan

January’s numbers are in from Web Tracker Net Applications, and they prove that Windows XP is still refusing to budge its high market share, despite it being only two months until Microsoft officially ends support for the operating system.

Not only does the market share for XP remain at over a quarter, but it has actually risen since December’s figures, climbing from 28.98% to 29.23%.

Microsoft will end support for XP on April 8 of this year, and many companies are slow on migrating to a new operating system. A Spiceworks study suggests that 76% of IT professionals are still running the OS 12 years after it was first released.

The figures also show that the share of Windows 8.1 has finally slipped past that of Windows Vista, with the former now standing at 3.95% up from 3.6%. Vista had a 3.61% share in December but is now down to 3.3%.

Comparing that to how Windows 7 was performing a year after its release, it’s still not looking great for 8. Windows 7 managed a 17% desktop share in 2010, compared to this month’s measly combined 10.58% of Windows 8 and 8.1.
