According to a report uncovered by Myce, Microsoft plans to launch its next operating system between April and September 2015.

Windows 9 and Windows Phone 9, a companion mobile operating system, will also be released in a ‘preview’ format in the first or second quarter 2015, the report claims.

Microsoft has not released any official comments about the release of Windows 9, but it is expected to get rid of the tiled interface that has been a point of contention with Windows 8.

It has been speculated that Microsoft will move off the Windows RT tablet operating system next year, with a unified operating system that can work on smartphones and tablets as a replacement. This would be Windows Phone 9.

Windows 8.1 was released in April of this year, with an update imminent that could include a traditional Windows Start menu.

Windows 8 has not been as successful as Microsoft’s previous operating systems. In February, the firm reported it has passed 200 million licenses sold for Windows 8, a figure that did not stand up to sales figures of Windows XP or Windows 7.
