Google is getting a Star Wars style makeover which will allows users to choose between the Empire or Rebel Alliance for the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

With the new initiative, Google users will be able to transform Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, Chrome, Android Wear Watches, and Google Calendar into a Star Wars experience through colours and icons of the Empire or the Rebel Alliance.

Google Product Management vice president Clay Bavor said: "We’ve got more coming between now and opening night — the Millennium Falcon in all its (virtual reality) glory included, so stay tuned.

"And we’ve hidden a few easter eggs, too.

"So awaken the Force within, and be on the lookout for things from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…"

The Star Wars franchise has teamed up with the search giant and Verizon to introduce the first-of-its-kind serialised Google Cardboard Virtual Reality (VR) experience.

The Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be available through the official Star Wars app for iOS and Android.

ILMxLAB, a new laboratory for immersive entertainment from Lucasfilm, Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound has also created a virtual reality content for the Google Cardboard VR experience.

Google Cardboard VR is a low cost headset which provides a similar viewing experience as Oculus and Smasung Galaxy Gear.
