An application that enables people view material from WikiLeaks.org on an iPhone or iPad has been removed from the Apple’s online store.
The company reportedly removed the WikiLeaks App from the App Store because it violated Apple’s developer guidelines, Bloomberg reported.
Apple spokeswoman for Cupertino Trudy Muller was quoted by Bloomberg as saying that Apps must comply with all local laws and may not put an individual or target group in harm’s way.
However, Muller declined to comment on why the application was originally approved, the news agency reported.
Apple follows other companies in blocking access to WikiLeaks, with the removal of the $1.99 application. WikiLeaks is a site that publishes classified documents.
EBay’s PayPal, Visa Europe, MasterCard and Bank of America Corp. have suspended payment processing for WikiLeaks, while Amazon.com has dropped the site from its website-hosting service.
In July WikiLeaks leaked records from the Afghan War and in October it disseminated Army field reports from Iraq, while it released about 250,000 classified diplomatic cables in November this year.
