Wi-Fi extends to 11 more underground stations

120 stations will be connected by the end of March.

By Tineka Smith

Virgin Media continues to roll out Wi-Fi on the London Underground with 11 new stations receiving access this week.

While free Wi-Fi will be ending this month, commuters who subscribe to Virgin Media, Vodafone, EE, T-Mobile and Orange will still stay connected for free due to wholesale agreements made in November.

Stations receiving Wi-Fi access this week include Gloucester Road, Highbury & Islington, Kentish Town, Great Portland Street, Tooting Bec, Tooting Broadway, Hampstead, Redbridge, Blackhorse Road and Hammersmith.

Virgin Media’s Wi-Fi service has been available since the London 2012 Olympic Games and was free to tube passengers throughout 2012.

Last month, Virgin Media announced plans to launch a Pay As You Go (PAYG) option offering daily, weekly and month passes.

Tube passengers can purchase a daily Wi-Fi pass for £2, a weekly one for £5 and a monthly one for £15.

Virgin media recently announced taking on EE and Vodafone as wholesale partners for its Wi-Fi underground service.

Virgin media claims that over 800,000 people have registered with its Wi-Fi service so far.

Passengers are able to access internet from the ticket hall, escalators and on the platforms in connected London underground stations. The WiFi service does not work in London Underground tunnels.
