Why Action for Children’s IT is going flexible with Citrix

How virtualisation will help charity's frontline staff work remotely.

By Joe Curtis

Action for Children is set to deploy flexible working for 6,000 employees with Citrix as it migrates from Windows XP.

The UK charity has announced a deal with the virtualisation specialist to undertake a major transformation project that will see up to 1,500 staff work remotely on tablets.

"From an IT perspective, Action for Children was at a crossroads," said Alan Crawford, director of information systems at the charity.

"Faced with a need to migrate from Windows XP and a highly mobile, disparate workforce, we took the opportunity to re-evaluate our employees’ IT needs."

Action for Children’s aims were to provide workers with the flexibility to work from any device, anywhere, whilst ensuring that apps and data were securely stored in a central location.

It is working with Kelway, a system reseller, to design and implement a mobile workspace built on Citrix’s XenDesktop, XenMobile and Netscaler, which together form Citrix Workspace Suite.

The suite integrates app and desktop virtualisation, mobile app and device management, enterprise file sharing, WAN optimisation and secure access to provide a virtualised working environment supporting remote working.

The deployment will feature a secure virtual desktop that will be managed centrally to reduce admin time and help users migrate away from XP, while the IT team can use it to add virtual applications to 6,000 staff across 400 sites.

Meanwhile, frontline staff will be able to access apps and data remotely on tablets while out visiting children the charity helps.

Jason Tooley, UK country manager for Citrix, said: "Used in a strategic way, technology can completely transform a work environment into somewhere more productive, flexible and efficient."
