WhatsApp co-founder and CEO Han Koum has revealed that the instant messaging app has amassed 430 million active users.

Comparatively, Snapchat had around 30 million active users in December.

Koum also revealed that users send and receive 50 billion messages through WhatsApp daily after it’s number of active users was doubled in just 10 months.

The figures comes as Koum spoke at yesterday’s DLD conference in Munich, Germany, where he maintained that WhatsApp would avoid advertising, games and "gimmicks" like some of its rivals, TechCrunch reported.

"The important thing is focus," said Koum. "We just want to focus on messaging. If people want to play games there are plenty of other sites and also a lot of great companies building services around advertising."

This implies that WhatsApp is not looking to directly rival the features of Snapchat, which was turned down a $3bn buyout offer from Facebook last year.
