West Nottinghamshire College has selected 2X Software to virtualise and rationalise its entire desktop infrastructure covering 2500 desktops, 600 laptops, 200 Macs and 25,000 users.
2X Software claims that its Virtual Desktop Server and Thin Client Server will provide each student with a ‘roving desktop’ that allows access to all permitted applications through single sign on from any IT point or college device.
2X Software offering will also enable the college to maximise the value of their existing PCs by converting them to operate as thin clients.
Future phases will bring remote desktop access to students, supporting extended learning, said 2X Software.
West Nottinghamshire College IT director Gavin Peake said they reviewed all of the big brand virtualisation options including Citrix but chose 2X as its server-based pricing model proved far more cost-effective, especially when scaled.
"2X’s rare facility to support a server-based and thin client model but still allow students to work with data on a USB was also invaluable in an educational setting," Peake said.
Installation and conversion began in late 2010 and will be phased across all of the college’s sites through 2012.
