VMware to buy Wanova

VMware plans to integrate its VMware View enterprise virtual desktop infrastructure with Wanova’s Mirage distribution software

By CBR Staff Writer

Virtualisation and cloud infrastructure firm VMware has entered into an agreement to acquire Wanova, an intelligent desktop solutions provider.

VMware plans to integrate its VMware View enterprise virtual desktop infrastructure with Wanova’s Mirage distribution software to enable IT organisations to offer an enhanced user experience for employees and increased operational savings across all device types.

VMware Enterprise Desktop vice president Jeff Jennings said the acquisition of Wanova will bring together the applications for centralised image management of both physical and virtual desktops.

"This combination has the potential to redefine the desktop virtualization landscape. By blurring the boundaries of virtual vs. physical desktops, the benefits of central image management and persistent user installed applications can be extended to all systems within a business – physical, virtual, tethered desktops, or roaming Mac and PC laptops," said Jennings.

Deploying centralised, single image management for both physical and virtual desktops will enable IT organisations to synchronise PC image updates/upgrades to all types of endpoints.

The combination of View and Mirage will provide a layering technology that will enable the deployment of persistent departmental and/or user installed applications in centrally managed desktop images.

Mirage has image-syncing ability that stores all elements of a user’s desktop image in a company’s private cloud for complete management and backup. It also has desktop streaming and layering to enable quick recovery and repair services for all types of endpoints, ven over WAN.
