Internet infrastructure services provider VeriSign Inc reckons it has issued more than four million Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates since becoming a Certificate Authority in1995.
VeriSign is responsible for issuing and authenticating a range of digital certificates designed to protect online businesses.
Its service is used to encrypt sensitive information during online transactions, authenticating the identity of certificate owners and warning users when certificates are invalid.
An assessment of certificates used for website security suggested that VeriSign and its acquired brands of Thawte and Geotrust had a share of the market touching 60% some 18 months ago, followed by Comodo and GoDaddy.
