Valve releases Steam gaming software for Linux

The launch comes as the video game manufacturer lays off 10% of its work force.

Video game company Valve has released the Linux operating system (OS) version of its Steam gaming software which is playable on the Ubuntu version.

The company’s online store offers users access to almost 60 games as well as the ability to download.

According to the firm, the launch is important as Linux is anticipated to be the operating system for its upcoming console which will allow Steam games to be played on TVs.

Canonical developer, David Pitkin, said that the new Steam users can now upgrade to Ubuntu.

"Steam Big Picture running on your Ubuntu computer connected to the living room TV is a great way to experience the future today," Pitkin said.

"Canonical looks forward to the steady progress of games from all our partners on Ubuntu and soon on the Ubuntu phone and tablet in due course."

Valve boss, Gabe Newell, said that the sackings did not mean it was cancelling any projects or changing its priorities.
