It grew 15% compared to the same period last year

By CBR Staff Writer

For the holiday season-to-date (November 2 to December 27) $35.3bn has been spent online in the US, an increase of 15% compared to the same period last year, according to research firm comScore.

The most recent week (ending Dec. 25) witnessed $2.8bn online spend, an increase of 16% compared to the same period last year.comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni said holiday e-commerce spending has remained strong throughout the season, and it has now reached a record $35 billion in US online sales for the season-to-date. "We can now say with certainty that the $1.25 billion spent on Cyber Monday will rank it as the heaviest online spending day of the season for the second consecutive year, but we should also note that it was accompanied by nine other billion dollar spending days this year," added Fulgoni.

This year’s Christmas Day saw a dramatic increase in purchases of digital content & subscriptions, a retail category that includes digital downloads of music, TV, movies, e-books and apps. This is because many consumers spend Christmas Day loading up their devices with new content, as they get new smartphones, tablets, e-readers and digital content gift certificates, says the research firm.

Digital content & subscriptions reportedly accounted for 20% of retail e-commerce sales on Christmas Day.
