The US continues to remain the top spam spreading country for the fourth time in a row, being responsible for 24.2% of the all spam sent during the second quarter of 2014.

According to SophosLabs Spampionship charts, France jumped to second position from 8th place last quarter, sending 6.7% of the spam, while China displaced Russia to grab the third position, spreading 6.2% of the spam.

During the quarter, Italy remained in fourth place followed by Russia and Germany spreading 5.2%, 5.1% and 3.6% of the spams respectively, while Argentina took the 12th position with 2.4% of the total spam sent during the second quarter of 2014.

Paul Ducklin of Sophos said: "The US tops the ‘by volume’ charts, simply because it has a large population and the bulk of the world’s internet Infrastructure."

It also suggested that it the countries on top of the list cannot be considered as the worst offenders as the majority of spam is sent unsuspectingly from malware-infected computers.

Sophos stated that in some cases cyber criminals could have accessed computers of unsuspected users from remote areas and performed activities like: going through personal files, logging keystrokes, download additional malware, even going to an extent of attacking other peoples websites.
