Twitter-owned Vine has rolled out a new messaging feature that enables users share video and text messages to any other users on the video app.

Adding both direct messaging channel and video clips to its messages, the new feature allows users to send videos to anyone, even if they are not in their personal address book.

Vine product manager Jason Toff said that the new feature came from understanding that there was a growing desire and need for private messaging on Vine.

"We’ve watched the community come up with some clever ways to send videos to their friends as we’ve been working on this solution," Toff added.

"Now you can privately send Vine videos and text messages to your friends. You can even send videos to anyone in your address book, even if they aren’t on Vine."

The latest update follows Instagram’s recent launch of a private messaging feature.
