Sony is in talks with Apple to double the number of its camera components for a new iPhone 6 anticipated to be launched next year.
Apple is looking to incorporate Sony’s sensors for the second camera on the front of the phone, which currently features components from US suppliers, according to Business Daily.
Sony currently supplies almost all of the complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensors for the existing iPhone 5S’s rear-mounted main cameras, as well as batteries for the iPad Air.
According to reports from Nikkei, Sony is ramping up on orders, which has prompted the company to acquire a plant from Japanese chipmaker Renesas Electronics.
Sony’s image sensor sales are anticipated to reach $3.47bn by the end of the year.
Sony sold its loss making Vaio-brand PC unit as part of plans to cut 5,000 jobs in a bid to replenish its electronics business.
