UK teenager launches new app to simplify news on iPhone and iPod Touch

The new app will allow users to customise news to the topics, keywords and news sources

By CBR Staff Writer

London based Nick D’Aloisio has launched Summly, an iOS app which uses an algorithm to summarise full news stories into bite-sized sentences to fit within a mobile device’s screen.

The new app will allow users to browse and read condensed summaries from their favorite news outlets, as well as discover new stories from hundreds of sources.

Summly will allow users to customise news to the topics, keywords and news sources as well as share summaries with friends via social channels, SMS, and email.

D’Aloisio said: "I designed Summly because I felt that my generation wasn’t consuming traditional news anymore."

"In designing for the mobile generation, I believe we’ve created an app that will benefit anyone who loves reading news on the go," D’Aloisio said.

"We’ve been able to build an industry-leading app that performs even better than human summaries in our tests. We think this is just the tip of the iceberg of what can be done with summarization technology," he said.

D’Aloisio said he partnered with several experts in the fields of artificial intelligence and design to build the new app.
