UK employees prioritise personal data over business data

The misplaced priority putting businesses at security risk.

By CBR Staff Writer

Around 52% of employees in the UK consider their personal data more valuable than work data, putting businesses at risk of security and identity theft.

Only 7% of employees prioritised business data over their personal data, while 43% claimed that they are clueless about the value of their business data, according to a research by Fujitsu.

89% of the respondents said that they trusted personal emails rather than the ones used by their companies, choosing not to mix personal data with work data due to security concerns.

The research also revealed that 58% of the employees understood the risks involved with identity theft, and 23% agreed that they and their organisations should take more care to protect incidents of theft.

However, only 13% of the employees were aware of the security their business had in place.

Fujitsu Cyber Professional Services head Andy Herrington said: "With 1 in 3 (30%) employees agreeing that they worry more about losing personal data than business data organisations have a challenge on their hands.

"While there is no quick fix in changing these perceptions the process needs to start with the people. Educating employees about the value of and how to protect their own personal data is a great starting point and businesses will see this data safeguarding attitude trickle through the business, helping employees become part of the threat defence."
