Nominet, the organisation supervising all UK web addresses, is all set to launch the ‘.uk domain’ names on 10 June 2014.
The launch would facilitate individuals and businesses to register the shorter domain names via their registrar together with existing ‘.co.uk’ or ‘.org.uk’ domains.
Nominet said in a statement: "Over ten million existing .uk domain holders will be offered the shorter equivalent of their current address, with five years to decide whether they want to use it in addition to, or instead of the domain they already have.
"Nominet will be contacting these customers following launch to ensure they’re aware of their opportunity to exercise this right," the agency said.
The firms seeking a shorter domain name registered on their name would have to confirm that they are based in the UK and pay charges up to eight times more than the current charges for a ‘.co.uk’ address.
In addition, Nominet has also updated ‘WHOIS tool’ to let individuals to search for who possesses the right of registration for an ‘.uk’ domain.
Nominet will charge £20 for shorter ‘.uk’ domain name per year compared to £5 at wholesale charge for a ‘.co.uk’ address for two years.
