A study by the European Commission’s Digital Agenda has found that companies in the UK are unable to take full advantage of e-government services.

Latest statistics from the Digital Agenda Scoreboard reveal that businesses in the UK making use of government e-services are 35% less than the European average. They also show that UK companies are lagging behind their counterparts in other European countries in the use of e-business methods.

UK businesses fall short of the EU average significantly in using analytical CRM software and implementing electronic supply chain management systems.

According to the data analysis of the progress of European countries since the European Digital Agenda was launched in 2010, it was found that 64% of UK businesses fell below the EU average when integrating internal processes, 81% when automatically exchanging business documents and 74% below the EU average when sending or receiving e-invoices.

European Commission for the Digital Agenda vice-president Neelie Kroes said, "A year after the launch of the Digital Agenda I note progress."

"However, member States, industry, civil society and the Commission need to do more if we want to maximise the agenda’s potential for retaining Europe’s competitiveness, stimulating innovation, and creating jobs and prosperity. I call on everybody to consider the massive long term benefit of acting decisively now, especially in high speed broadband," Kroes added.
