Twitter is offering its users the option of logging on to the site through a secure connection by using HTTPS, a technology similar to the one used to protect online bank accounts and online purchases.
The feature is not compulsory as it could slow down access to a service because of the multiple checks involved while authenticating data.
The "always use HTTPS" setting is believed to be an attempt by the microblogging site to prevent hackers target people as they connect over public Wi-Fi.
The HTTPS or Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure option can now be used by changing an option in Twitter’s security settings.
The secure mode of logging in is expected to benefit e-Commerce sites using Twitter and those who have a very large following on the site.
In January, Facebook had announced that it will begin offering HTTPS security to its users.
