Twitter has launched a stand-alone music-streaming service called #music, that allows people find music of their interest and tweet songs from iTunes, Spotify and Rdio for free.

The new service can be downloaded as an app for iPhone through Apple’s online store, while the web version allows users stream songs based on users’ following on Twitter and artists’ recommendations.

Twitter engineers said in a statement the new service uses Twitter activity, which include Tweets and engagement, to detect and surface the most popular tracks and emerging artists.

"It also brings artists’ music-related Twitter activity front and centre: go to their profiles to see which music artists they follow and listen to songs by those artists," engineers said.

According to the micro-blogging site, the #music is being offered in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

The new app is compatible with Apple’s iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation) and iPad, which are powered by iOS 6.0 or later versions.

Twitter’s launch of new service comes four months after the introduction of Vine stand-alone video-sharing app.

Twitter has earlier acquired Australia-based music streaming startup, We Are Hunted, as part of its efforts to become a hub for multimedia content distribution.
