Twitter is planning to add a feature to allow users to embed videos to their tweets.

Off late the microblogging site is trying to make its platform video friendly.

The feature will allow users to embed, play and display video clips on their smartphones.

Once the users embed the video, it will show a screenshot image from the video at the bottom of the message composition field. The video will start playing once the receiver clicks on the image.

Twitter said that it is one of the experiments it is making and in future it could allow embedding longer videos with the 140-character message.

The move has led to speculation that Twitter will seek to monitise the featuer through video advertising.

Twitter was linked with a move to acquire German music sharing service SouthCloud, which is considered to be ‘YouTube’ for audio.

SoundCloud is an online audio service which allows users to upload, record, promote and share their originally-created sounds. The free service has 250 million users.

During the fourth quarter of 2013, the micro-blogging site reported a net loss of $511m despite a 116% year-over-year increase in its revenue to $243m.

During the quarter, the company’s advertising revenue increased by 121% to $220m, compared to the same period previous year, while its mobile advertising revenue was 75% more than its total advertising revenue.

For 2013, the company experienced a net loss of $645m in spite of 110% growth in revenue to $665m.
