Trustwave has announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire web security vendor M86 Security. The deal will add web and email protection to its portfolio.
Trustwave, a provider of cloud-based compliance and information security, says the deal will see it add M86’s Secure Web Gateway, WebMarshal and Web Filtering and Reporting Suite products to its portfolio. Its email security arsenal will also be boosted with M86’s MailMarshal platform.
A cloud-based anti-malware platform being developed by M86 will join up with Trustwave’s TrustKeeper portal. Additionally, M86 Security Labs will become part of Trustwave SpiderLabs, a division within Trustwave that focuses on penetration testing, incident response, application security and security research.
"By acquiring M86 Security, Trustwave is adding Web security to one of the industry’s most comprehensive security product portfolios – including our compliance, application, network and data security solutions," said Robert McCullen, chairman and CEO at Trustwave.
M86 CEO John Vigouroux added: "Trustwave has a tremendously successful track record of not only finding, acquiring and integrating security companies but also continuing to innovate their products and technologies."
"Customers and partners have a lot to look forward to as the combination of Trustwave and M86 Security gives them access to a broader, unified security portfolio powered by the industry’s most advanced threat technology intelligence," he added.
Vigouroux spoke to CBR last year, when he accused his rivals in the security space of "miserable" job of protecting their customers, due to their reliance on out of date technologies that are not able to keep up with modern threats.
M86 was formed in September 2009 after a number of mergers and acquisitions. Web filtering firm 8e6 Technologies merged with email and web security vendor Marshal Software to form Marshal8e6. The new venture then acquired antimalware company Avinti and changed its name to M86. The new company then rounded out its product portfolio by acquiring Finjan, who offered a secure web gateway platform.

Both parties are private and financial details were not disclosed. The deal is expected to close in the next few weeks.
