TomTom releases location based application development portal for apps developers

New cloud-based portal will represent TomTom's widespread mapping database expose

Dutch navigation device manufacturer TomTom has made available large amount of mapping data to apps developers, to allow rapid development of apps.

The new location based services (LBS) platform and developer portal is now available in the cloud, to compete in the Web and mobile mapping market.

Available for free on a trial basis, while have to pay for using the data for commercial purposes, the new cloud-based LBS Platform offers firms with access to its location and navigation services that include map display, routing, traffic and geocoding.

TomTom Location and Live Services vice president Dan Adams said in response to the increasing demand for top quality data and services, the firm is offering a comprehensive, easy to use solution for adding location intelligence to applications.

"The launch of the TomTom LBS Platform is an important evolution," Adams said.

"Now we can provide application developers with web-based access to high-quality location content worldwide."

The firm, which offers its own Navigator apps for both iOS and Android claims the new portal will allow developers tools to build new Web-based as well as mobile-device applications.

Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) Corporate Accounts director Joost Ravoo said NS, Netherlands Railways, and TomTom recently launched a webtool providing customers with a world premiere: an objective comparison between real-time public transport and road traffic information.

"We are happy to see our passengers turn into better informed and more quality conscious customers", Ravoo said.
