Tizen could be fifth major mobile OS in 2013

Tizen would power new Samsung smartphones during the following quarter

By CBR Staff Writer

Tizen is projected to be the fifth largest mobile operating system (OS) in 2013, according to a new report from ABI Research.

The research firm revealed that a bunch of new open source mobile operating systems are set to reshape the mobile industry.

Jolla has already launched its first smartphone powered by Sailfish OS, Firefox would be launched on ZTE devices in Latin America and other emerging regions during late 2013, while Tizen would power new Samsung smartphones during the following quarter, the report said.

Tizen senior analyst Joshua Flood said that Tizen’s strong backing from Intel and Samsung will enable it to quickly surpass its other Linux mobile OS challengers.

"Additionally, other segments of the mobile ecosystem are keen for a new mobile OS to usurp Apple and Google’s dominance in the market," Flood said.

"Mobile network operators, particularly in Asia, have been looking for other options.

"Apple’s refusal to modify its OS for operators to add customised services or differentiate operators’ brands is one of the key factors for their discontent."

In addition, Ubuntu-based mobile devices are also ready to take-off in the second half of 2013.

ABI Research also projects that the new group of OS platforms would make stable growth over the following five years, with 135 million smartphone shipments globally.
