US based cable company Time Warner Cable announced that email passwords of up to 320,000 customers have been compromised.
The company noted that the emails and passwords might have been compromised through malware downloaded during phishing attacks, or it could have been the result of data breach in other companies that stored Time Warner Cable’s customer information.
Time Warner was notified by the FBI that some customer email addresses and account passwords had been compromised on Wednesday afternoon.
The company has not yet come to a conclusion regarding how the information was obtained, but it highlighted that it has not found any indications that Time Warner Cable’s systems were breached.
Reuters cited Time Warner as saying that it is working to reach out to customers who might have been affected by the incident and has advise them to change their passwords using a "strong, unique alternative."
Time Warner customers have been subjected to a series of outrage in recent times which includes including one in November, and one before and on New Year’s Day.
In 2009, a vulnerability in a Time Warner cable modem and Wi-Fi router used by 65,000 customers allowed a hacker to remotely access the device’s administrative menu over the internet.
