Tessera unveils new face recognition technology

Performs automatic identification of specific human faces in camera equipped mobile devices

By CBR Staff Writer

Tessera Technologies has unveiled its Fotonation FaceRecognition technology, which performs automatic identification of human faces in mobile phones with built in cameras. The company claims that this embedded imaging system makes the integration of face recognition ability directly into devices such as mobile phones, digital cameras and others, quicker and cost effective.

Tessera added that when used in conjunction with Fotonation FaceTracker or other such technology, this system provides diverse set of applications which include meta tagging, person-based image optimisation, where the focus, exposure and image processing related to an identified person’s face is automatically optimised during image capture and processing; and automatic image uploading.

Michael Bereziuk, executive vice president of imaging & optics at Tessera, said: “We are seeing increased interest in facial recognition for consumer devices because of the ubiquity of cameras and the variety of benefits that come with knowledge of the identity of the person being captured by the camera.

“With the Fotonation FaceRecognition system, a mobile phone camera can automatically tag a photograph containing a specific person’s face and email the image directly to a friend or upload it to social networking site.”
