Telent was won a contract with Network Rail to replace cameras, monitors, housings and cabling, known as a Driver Only Operator system, at 159 platforms across 66 stations throughout south east England.
The project was secured after a five-way tender and will see Telent install and commission the new systems at stations served by trains operated by Southeastern and Southern. The company will be installing 900 CCTV cameras and 1,200 monitors and all associated housing and cabling works.
A Driver Only Operator system enables a train driver to check via CCTV that train doors are clear and that it is safe to pull away from the platform. As well as improving safety this enables stations to operate without a train dispatcher.
Each system will need to be individually designed as platforms curvatures and train formations are different, and monitors need to be placed at every stopping point along the platform. Telent says it will be using its own in-house software modelling package to design the CCTV camera and monitor layouts to fit each platform as required.
The project has already begun and is scheduled to be completed in June 2010.
