The Twitter account of the British broadcaster ITV has been hacked by the Syrian Electronic Army, within a week after the micro-blogging site announced plan to strengthen security to prevent such attacks.
ITV’s London news Twitter account @itvlondon was hacked on 24 May 2013 and was used to support spoof stories regarding Syrian rebels, before the hackers tweeted "Just kidding. The Syrian Electronic Army was here. #SEA via @Official_SEA12."
Further, the British broadcaster revealed that it had been infiltrated and it was working to resume normal service as soon as possible.
An ITV spokesman said that the security breach was done through a phishing email.
"The ITV News London Twitter account was compromised for a short time but has now been secured and the Tweets have been deleted," the spokesman said.
According to reports, the Syrian Electronic Army was also responsible for recent attacks on The Financial Times’s social media accounts, which were infiltrated with connections to war atrocity videos.
Recently, Twitter added an optional ‘two-factor authentication’ feature using mobile phone verification on the social network, to strengthen security following a series of high-profile breaches into its accounts in recent past.
Twitter’s move comes after recent hacking of Twitter accounts of the news agencies including Associated Press (AP), The Guardian, the BBC, France 24 TV, and National Public Radio in the US.
