Sustainable green IT solutions too scarce: report

Vendors accused of ‘green-washing’ poor solutions

By CBR Staff Writer

Headline-grabbing green-gloss IT announcements front little more than vapourware, a research group on climate change has warned today, after it found around only one in six products demonstrate significant sustainability benefit.

According to a research note issued by Verdantix, the first wave of green IT solutionshas failed to make sustainability benefits tangible, the company said after it carried out a comprehensive assessment of the sector.

“Our analysis of 24 different categories of IT solutions that support sustainability goals paints a picture of an industry beginning to understand the potential revenues to be claimed in this market.” But sustainability directors need real solutions.

The company’s appraisal of Green technology covered systems used to measure or manage greenhouse gas emissions, those that reduce energy demands or promote energy efficiency, and others that can be deployed to cut road vehicle or aviation fuel use and eliminate waste from supply chains.

“Over the last 2 years, despite the noise from high decibel green IT marketing the reality is that the tech sector has only just got out of the starting blocks” said Verdantix director David Metcalfe.

Green data centres are in the spotlight, as well as innovation in areas like remote energy management for households and green house gases management, and business intelligence software to automate energy efficiency.
