Sunbelt Software, a provider of Windows security software, has unveiled an upgrade to Vipre Antivirus and has expanded its Vipre product family with the launch of Vipre Antivirus Premium 4.0, which includes desktop firewall and other anti-malware technologies.

Vipre Antivirus 4.0, the new version of the company’s original VIPRE Antivirus + Antispyware, includes enhancements such as the support for removable drives; 64-bit environments, including a 64-bit boot cleaner and 64-bit rootkit scanner; and Mozilla Firefox scan extensions.

According to Sunbelt Software, the Premium edition includes features such as, two-way firewall that is based on the company’s Personal Firewall technology. The new integrated bi-directional firewall supports 32 and 64-bit environments and protects users from unwanted incoming and outgoing traffic. The firewall provides inbound and outbound protection, requiring users to train the firewall on acceptable outbound traffic.

In addition, there is a boot time firewall mode, which limits access on the PC to only certain resources upon loading. It also includes web filtering functionalities including malicious URL filtering, ad blocking, anti-phishing, script blocking and cookie settings.

The intrusion detection system functionality provides an additional layer of protection against both inbound and outbound malicious internet traffic, while the host intrusion prevention functionality protects against an attack vector known as code injection, where an application attempts to ride-along the credentials of another application to exploit a system, Sunbelt said.

Alex Eckelberry, CEO of Sunbelt Software, said: These new releases continue to provide our end-users high performance protection from malware threats that has made Vipre so successful in the market. The Premium edition is notable in that we didn’t set out to build a suite with ‘everything but the kitchen sink’. Instead, we focused on the task of providing outstanding desktop anti-malware protection, without any compromises in performance.
