StillSecure unveils new managed security service for virtual environments

Offers firewall and intrusion detection/prevention (IDS/IPS) services for detecting and blocking network attacks

By CBR Staff Writer

StillSecure has unveiled a new managed security service ProtectPoint VSS (virtual security service), which allows data centres, hosting providers and colocation facilities to provide secure virtual environments for their customers.

According to StillSecure, the new security service provides firewall and intrusion detection/prevention (IDS/IPS) services for detecting and blocking network attacks. It leverages VMware’s VMsafe APIs to access the hypervisor and virtual-to-virtual connections within the virtual environment. The company’s SAS-70 Type II certified security operations centre (SOC) manages all operations.

The single VSS protects all virtual machines in the virtual environment. Enterprises can leverage VSS to protect their growing virtual environments and simultaneously outsource the heavy lifting of monitoring and managing the security process, the company claims.

In addition, ProtectPoint VSS takes advantage of VMware’s VMotion technology, which leverages the complete virtualisation of servers, storage and networking to move an entire running virtual machine from one physical server to another, StillSecure said.

Steve Harris, vice president of managed security services at StillSecure, said: All of the security considerations that apply to a physical network apply to the virtual environment, yet it is mistakenly assumed that going virtual means you’re automatically secure.

“With ProtectPoint VSS, we’re providing an easy to implement, scalable method for securing the virtual environment. And, perhaps best of all, StillSecure manages the entire process through our award-winning ProtectPoint managed services platform.
