Steve Jobs to unveil Apple iCloud, iOS 5, Lion at WWDC next week

Jobs' second public appearance this year

By CBR Staff Writer

Apple will announce several new products next week, including its cloud service ‘iCloud’, iOS 5 and Lion, the eighth version of its OS for Mac computers.

Apple founder and CEO Steve Jobs will officially return to Apple from medical leave to deliver the keynote address at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) which is to be held between 6-10 June in San Francisco.

Jobs, 56, was on medical leave from January this year. He made a rare appearance to launch Apple’s iPad2 in March.

A press release by Apple said that the keynote will be given by "Steve Jobs and a team of Apple executive."

Unlike most of its previous conferences, this year’s WWDC may not see any any new hardware launches.

However, Apple will unveil its ‘iCloud’, which it described as its ‘cloud services’ offering. The service is expected to offer cloud services rivalling that of Google and Amazon.

Apple had bought the ‘iCloud.com’ domain name in April. Since then, there have been rumours of a cloud-based service from the company.

Last month, Reuters reported that Apple had struck deals with three of the four major music labels as parts of its efforts to launch an online music storage and streaming service.

The report said, citing people familiar with the matter, that while Warner Music Group was the first to reach a deal with Apple, EMI Group and Sony Music Entertainment followed. A source said that Universal Music Group was "within days of putting pen to paper on the new cloud service."
