The flow of spam in mail traffic has declined 4.5% during October 2012 to 68% when compared to September 2012, reaching the lowest levels all through the year, according to Kaspersky.
The security firm revealed that the risk posed by spam has been high as 3.25% of all emails contained malicious files, reporting a mere 0.15% points reductions over the earlier month.
During the month, China and the US topped the list of most active spam senders by reporting 30.7% and 27.3% rises respectively over the previous month.
China had highest share of about 53.3% in sending spam mainly to users in Europe, followed by the US with 13.4% share reporting a 2.7% point rise in total spam distribution.
According to the firm, Italy reported 3.9% points rise in its contribution of European spam that makes it to the third place, while India’s share of spam sent to European countries declined by 6% points during the month.
Kaspersky Lab Content Analysis & Research head Darya Gudkova said during the month the percentage of spam may have decreased, but it didn’t become any less dangerous as a lot of malicious and phishing emails were targeting users’ money.
"This will probably continue in the run-up to the Christmas and New Year holidays," Gudkova said.
"Users should be especially watchful when making e-payments and entering confidential data on the Internet.
"Do not click links in spam emails and do not open attachments from unknown senders. Apply software updates as soon as they appear."
In October 2012, the number of phishing attacks on social networking websites declined by 10.23% points, while the attacks on financial organisations increased by 2.85% points and attacks on online stores and e-auctions increased by 5.42% points.
