Sourcefire releases new version of 3D System

Adds intrusion prevention system enhancements including network visibility, dashboard customisation options and policy layering capability

By CBR Staff Writer

Sourcefire has released 3D System 4.9 that provides more than 2 dozen intrusion prevention system (IPS) enhancements, including improved network visibility, new dashboard customisation options and the policy layering capability.

In addition, the company has also released its VMware-based virtual appliances to extend IPS protection to virtualised systems and remote office locations.

According to Sourcefire, the Adaptive IPS automates intrusion prevention functions such as IPS tuning, impact assessment, user correlation and network discovery. Policy Layering capability enables organisations with multiple detection policies to construct them in building blocks allowing them to create and modify policies by geography, site, department or by user.

The company has also added a Custom Analysis Widget to its dashboard, and it has expanded its application detection capabilities by adding new detectors for Oracle, Firefox, Gnutella, Timbuktu.

The company said that it is shipping its VMware-based virtual appliances, including the Virtual 3D Sensor and Virtual Defense centre. The Virtual 3D Sensor which is compatible with VMware’s ESX and ESXi platforms, offers IPS protection from 5 to 500Mbps and can be monitored and managed by physical or virtual defense centre management consoles.

These new virtual appliances afford enterprises, managed security service providers (MSSPs), and cloud computing providers with the same Snort-based IPS protection as their physical 3D Sensor counterparts, the company said.

Sourcefire said that its Virtual 3D Sensor and Virtual Defense Center enable users to secure their virtual environments and to virtualise their security implementations for increased operational efficiencies. Organisations can leverage these virtual appliances to monitor traffic between two or more virtual machines (Vms), physical hosts and Vms, multiple physical hosts and help contain the problem of VM sprawl.

Tom McDonough, president and COO at Sourcefire, said: “With Sourcefire’s new virtual security solutions, organisations can secure their VMware infrastructure and better leverage their VMware investment. Sourcefire now enables customers to secure critical assets in both their physical and virtual environments without the fear of disrupting business operations.”
