Security software and hardware developer Sophos has released a free lightweight anti-virus app, Mobile Security, that protects Android devices against malware, privacy issues and hardware loss.

The new release automatically scans apps as users install them, by using intelligence from Sophos Labs as well as blocks the undesirable software and malicious code that can lead to data loss and unexpected costs.

Sophos Mobile Security can locate lost or stolen Android devices and provides a remote lock to shield personal information from unintended users, the company said.

The security firm is also plannning to offer a managed Enterprise version of Sophos Mobile Security with enhanced functionality. It will help corporate users to provide enhanced protection for corporate devices and data.

Sophos Product Management vice president Matthias Pankert said, "Android users must be vigilant as the number of threats continues its rapid ascent; this is why apps like Sophos Mobile Security are becoming so much more important."
