Sony has announced a plan to focus on high-end smartphones instead of budget models in a bid to make its smartphone business take on Apple’s iPhone.
According to Bloomberg, Sony chief executive, Kazuo Hiraim, said the firm is basically out of the feature-phone business and in the Android-based smartphone business.
"We are more in toward the high end of the market as opposed to trying to get into the commoditized portion," Kazuo Hirai.
"We need to have products that wow people, move people emotionally.
"That’s why we are in this business, and that’s why we invested heavily in the business. I believe we still have a lot of room to grow."
The firm is also expecting to sell 34 million units in 2013 and had sold 8.8 million handsets in the three months to September 2012.
Sony has also increased research & development outlay for smartphones, which is expected to deliver higher margins after execution.
Recently, Sony released the Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) powered Xperia Z smartphone, which ithe company says is dust and water resistant.
