Sony has said that it has entrusted the task of finding the culprit behind the massive security breach, believed to have compromised sensitive data of over 100 million users worldwide, to cyber-security detectives.
Sony has shut down its Playstation Network (PSN) since 19 April, the day it discovered the hack. Later it had to shut down its Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) as well as it discovered that the breach had expanded its net to the service.
Sony said that cyber-security detectives from Guidance Software, Protiviti and Data Forte are among those handling the case.
A former special agent with the US Naval Criminal Investigative Service heads Data Forte.
Officials from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have already said that they are investigating the matter.
The security breach, which brought down Sony’s PlayStation and Qriocity video- and music-streaming services since 19 April, also exposed information from a 2007 database which contained details of credit and debit cards of about 12,700 non-US customers – mainly in Austria, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain.
Sony has already been sued by people in the US and may face legal action from the US and the UK governments.
