SonicWall double secures UTM firewall line

‘Clean’ technology added to more units

By CBR Staff Writer

SonicWall Inc is to reinforce more of its line of unified threat management firewalls with ‘clean SSL VPN’ technology.

Clean VPN adds an extra element of network security to the usual end point control features of an SSL VPN appliance that allow security administrators define specific criteria or attributes that an endpoint must meet to adhere to the company security policy.

Those processes can check certificates or files and will screen traffic for viruses or spyware, but even then, it is still possible for malicious packets to enter the corporate network over the SSL connection. This is especially true when connections are established from untrusted endpoints like home PCs or internet cafes.

SonicWall has developed a way it can provide another layer of network protection, by marrying the SonicWall Network Security Appliance (NSA) with its Aventail clientless SSL VPN appliance which can then be deployed together to provide a Clean VPN.

This brings an additional level of security with high-speed deep packet inspection, intrusion prevention, content filtering and application firewall capabilities. The company maintains its NSA ensures that all traffic is scanned in real-time and decontaminated before it is given access to the internal network.

Today it said that the clean SSL VPN remote access technology, which has already been deployed will be integrating into its TZ 210 and NSA firewalls. The Sunnyvale, California-based vendor said the SSL based Clean VPN is available through a firmware upgrade.
